Our Mission
Science is developing at an unprecedented rate. Leaders of tomorrow will need to have an appreciation for the role of science in our lives and an understanding of basic scientific concepts. Science FUNdamentals is a great way to expose children to the opportunities science provides, and to encourage children to apply science in fun and stimulating ways.
Science FUNdamentals takes on a long-term approach to education. The true beneficiaries of this program are the children with whom we share our passion for science. These children have a rare opportunity to meet and interact with post-secondary students, and to learn how to uncover the wonders of science in the world around them. Our goal is to open the eyes of these children to the possibilities available to them with an education and to demonstrate to them what they can accomplish so long as they have an open mind.
How it works:
Classroom Activities
- Currently, our demonstrations target grades 4 to 6.
- With our presentations, we hope to reinforce key concepts students may have previously learned as well as expose them to exciting areas of science that they may not otherwise have an opportunity to learn.
- Each pair of volunteers does interactive in-class science activities at least once a month with the same class.
- Most volunteers do their first presentation in October and their last in April, although presentations for only October-December or January-April can be requested.
- The selection and scheduling of the activities is done between the teachers and volunteers.
- Each school may have any number of classrooms signed up for in-class demonstrations; each classroom will be assigned a different volunteer pair.
- Our volunteers are all undergraduate and graduate students at the University of Alberta.
- All programs offered by Science FUNdamentals is absolutely FREE! Everything is 100% volunteer-driven, and we supply all materials.
Videoconferencing to Rural Schools
- Just as for in-class presentations, each class is assigned a pair of volunteers who videoconference to them at least once a month. The presentations are modified versions of the in-class presentations, often incorporating online resources. For some presentations, teachers may be asked to buy simple, household items for the class to use in experiments during the presentation.
Science FUNday
- FUNday is a one day science show held every year on a Sunday in March, at the University. Everyone is welcome!
